We spent 2 days in the North Atlantic on the surface due to a problem. I was the diesel operator and by the end of the second day I was the only operator that could function. We would climb a wave and crest it and if you weren't hanging on you would smash off the ceiling when the bow would drop over. The diesel compartment on a 637 class is in the forward most portion of the bow. It was a very unpleasant 2 days I can clue you. I remember walking down middle level ops and walking right up the wall and then down across the floor and up the other wall. I was thinking for 2 days that I joined submarines so I wouldn't have to put up with winter storms in the North Atlantic on the surface
