I ran the scrubbers and such and we didn't need the surface at all until food ran out. It would get pretty stale even though the air tested fine. Now and again we would stick the snorkel up and take a gulp of air just to get some fresh stuff while we were doing radio traffic.

I also ran the O2 generator which was affectionately called the bomb. We had a fire in her on my watch once. I pulled the 4MC and called fire in the O2 generator and then went over to stabilize and de-energize the machine. Before I could blink machinery one was full of half the crew with fire fighting equipment of one kind or another. Never seen such a crowd or response:)
