The banking system does seem sound. Lehman Brothers is being carved up, with Barclays buying a chunk.

The reason the USA does well is because extreme left wing socialists wanting a government department to inspect loans have not held sway, though the effort to force "affordable housing" for sub-prime minorities and others is worth a closer look and you will find politicians there.

That's where the problem arose.

If people won't take responsibility for their silly lending and borrowing, and want a scapegoat, you can be sure they learn nothing and do stupid things again, probably the same thing.
