Recall that when the market crashed in '87, there was plenty of talk of the same, and the economy got along just fine. Wall Street tends to overstate its importance in our economy, and Washington DC tends to believe it too much, hence the bailouts of Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, and AIG.

Our economy is in bad shape, and all those bailouts don't help a bit. Wall St has lost a ton of money, and will probably lose a lot more before this is over. We ought to let them lose and stay out of it, so that the rest of the economy can get back on its feet and recover. The government has it backwards, and it is costing all of us.
