Jhild the $600k in property taxes is a whole different issue that one shouldn't use to compare. The main thing to remember is his house does not produce an income and MSFT does.

Now my point about how long it would take for the fine to eat up one billion dollars was really to show how foolish the fine is and why I think it's a political move more that anything else. It could be cost effective for MSFT to pay the fine while destroying Netscape and taking their market share. I don't think it would take the full billion to accomplish that goal.

If the Justice Dept. really wants to correct a wrong being done to MSFT's competitors it would ask the court to have MSFT immediately cease shipping, downloading or distributing I.E. 4.0 until the problem was corrected. My guess is MSFT would have a patch available by the end of the week (if not sooner) to correct the problem.

But Reno picked the one million dollar amount because it sounds big to the vast majority of Americans, AND it diverts attention from other administration bad press.

Basically the fine is a tax which can be pasted on to the consumer, NOT a serious attempt to cure the precieved problem! IMHO
