Redneck began in West Virginia and Southern PA when the striking coal miners rebelled against the hired guns of the mine owners and marched some long distance, town to town, all wearing red bandanas around their necks in solidarity. So, as lame as it is used now, it is actually one of the first signs of union solidarity.

The murder of miners was common as well as those who supported their effort.
