Standard & Poor’s announced Tuesday that Harris Corp. will replace the newly bankrupt Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. on the S&P 500 Index.

Harris. whose Broadcast Communications Division is headquartered in Mason, will join the index after the close of business on Friday.

Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a failed attempt to find a buyer last weekend. The company’s financial condition became unsustainable due to its exposure to the ongoing housing mortgage meltdown.

Melbourne, Fla.-based Harris (NYSE: HRS) is an international communications and information technology company that employs more than 16,000 people worldwide. The company generates revenue of more than $5 billion and operates in about 150 countries.
