I wasn't, when stuff REALLY hit the fan in 92-93. Frankly,
I don't care. There is ONE thing I deeply appreciate and love
about this country, it's called FREEDOM. When I came in 91,
the first feeling I got was how FREE this country is. You
can call the President an asshole (and he is) and NOT be put
to jail for it, as you certainly would be, in Russia.
Guess what? This country is not as Free anymore as it was in 91.

I am very afraid,
bordering paranoia, that it will be taken away from us.
Americans take freedom for granted, but it ain't. We've seen
small steps, tiny small steps before freedom disappears and
turns into a totalitarian regime. THEN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON
THE COUNTRY or TAKE ARMS and FIGHT FOR IT. The good thing is
that we are definitely not there yet <G>

Overall, a small piece of land where you can grow stuff helped
us a lot through difficult times, since we grew 70% of all
the food... I don't think things will get all THAT bad here.

I love Russia dearly, and the people are really nice there
if you visit, but I am not sure the country will
become completely free in my lifetime. It's still in the
process of transformation, it's not clear if communism was
simply replaced by another criminal semi-totalitarian regime.
There is certainly a lot more freedom now, but ...
