BWAC,

The proposal being reported by the WSJ (not yet fact, no named source) is to ban ALL short sales.

IMO, this is shutting down an integral component of the market system - just one step short of what Russia has done for the past three days to their markets.

I completely agree that existing laws should have been enforced; and must be enforced. Persistent naked short sellers should be jailed, or, even worse, lose all trading privileges forever.

But banning legal short sales is more likely to result in unplanned, unforeseen consequences far worse than what we have today. ... even if done with the best of intentions.
