"Palin's respect turned out to be an infatuation."

I saw a picture that said 'We Respect John McCain, ... We love Sarah Palin' and that seemed to me to be capturing the sentiment accurately. Connotations for the word 'infatuation' suggests the support is fleeting rather than genuine, and that is what's on the table.
