Dang! I didn't even know that. Sir Humph was knighted for inventing the carbide lamp, which made coal mining a lot safer. I used to have one of those way back when. You put some rocks in a little tank, added water and presto! Light!

Wednesday we spent some time and had lunch at Roslyn, WA where Northern Exposure was filmed. We ate in that little cafe with the camel painted on the side, which was used in the closing frames of the show.

Next to the cafe was a display of the coal cars and implements that were used to mine coal in the area in the late 19th/early 20th century. According to the sign 3/5s of the coal is still there, and I inquired about whether they would reopen the mine since oil is so high these days. The locals seem to think not. Apparently those mines were exceedingly dangerous. There was a big memorial to all the miners who lost their lives, and there were many.
