What you say about the banks & brokerage houses squares with what I know about it too, but it wasn't some Republican plot--greed hath no affiliation.

And again, I do think the sub-primes couldn't have been made, or at least not sold to other investors if Fannie and Freddie hadn't allowed these type of loans--- which the NY Times yesterday reported that Democrats in congress were for these types of loans as it got previously unqualified people into houses.

Ideology does some dangerous things when it meets economics.
