Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) and Wuhan city government (Hubei province, China) will jointly kick off official operation of the 12-inch wafer fab built in Wuhan on September 22.
SMIC is assigned to manage the 12-inch fab, which was built with financial support from Wuhan city government. The Wuhan fab is the fourth 12-inch fab under the watch of SMIC, which has already set up similar fabs in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
On behalf of the Wuhan 12-inch fab, Richard Chang, chairman of SMIC, is expected to sign a strategic cooperation agreement with NAND flash vendor Spansion during the fab's opening ceremony, according to market sources.
With technological support from SMIC, the fab will produce NAND flash for Spansion and other clients, the sources noted.
SMIC's 12-inch fab in Shanghai will be used for R&D products, the fab in Beijing will migrate into the production of logic chips, while the one in Shenzhen will mainly serve IC design houses in China, indicated the sources. |
