I started with mutual funds when I rolled over into a self-managed IRA. Gradually, I began selling off the funds and started making my own picks.

Now, they're ALL my own picks. I'm doing much better than I ever would have sticking with the funds, although there was a painful learning curve involved. Much more fun too!
