Wal*Mart Rolls Out New Telxon AirAware Wireless Networking Solution

AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Wal*Mart, the world's largest retailer has initiated the roll-out of Open AirGate(TM), a new Telxon Corporation (Nasdaq:TLXN) wireless networking solution which provides the retailing giant with new levels of functionality and better support for managing the world's largest retail wireless information management network.

''A module of Telxon's innovative family of AirAware(TM) wireless communication software products, Open AirGate enables Wal*Mart to reduce the complexity and cost of managing wireless networking in over 3,100 business units worldwide,'' said David D. Loadman, chief technical officer for Telxon Corporation. ''The new system provides for dynamic loading of new applications to Telxon mobile computers via dynamic software distribution and version control. Utilizing patented Telxon technology, it also permits automatic detection of duplicate terminal addressing,'' Loadman said. Wal*Mart has over 100,000
Telxon RF wireless devices in its domestic and international locations.

''By using load balancing and full redundancy between multiple Windows NT(TM) platforms, Open AirGate promotes high system availability and optimum user performance,'' he explained.

Once rolled out, Open AirGate will allow Wal*Mart to better support our store and club associates and the ever-expanding in-store spread spectrum network which continues to be deployed worldwide throughout our chain of stores,'' said Kevin Turner, vice president of store applications for the Arkansas-based retail giant.

Turner said Open AirGate meets Wal*Mart's requirements of supporting industry standards such as Windows NT, DHCP, TCP/IP and SNMP.

''Open AirGate is the product of a team effort between Wal*Mart and Telxon, and the result of understanding the needs and problems of a massive and complex wireless network that can only be appreciated in a retailing environment the size of Wal*Mart,'' Loadman said.

''This exciting new application solves many of the problems that users of spread spectrum mobile computers can experience once systems have been deployed. ''We have learned that the largest cost of owning a wireless in- store network is the cost of supporting and maintaining it,'' Loadman continued.

''Open AirGate is one of many exciting new software packages that Telxon is announcing and rolling out to address the global
challenges of cost effective management and support of wireless networks,'' said Frank Brick, president and CEO for Telxon.
''Telxon's goal is to provide the highest level of functionality available in our industry to install, manage and monitor wireless
networks.''

''Because of its tremendous size and growth, Wal*Mart, a Telxon strategic partner, has the unique ability to challenge our technology and support capabilities,'' Brick said. ''We will continue to strive to provide Wal*Mart and all of our customers with the tools needed to better support our technology.''
