Since when is an application program a part of the operating
system?? MSFT lawyers are contending that the consent
decree allows them to enhance their o/s, & that is just what
they have done, with a browser(!!!).

Novell had a legit net o/s. MSFT has legit network interfaces
in Windows & in NT. However, a browser is not and never will
be considered operating system software.

According to the DOJ, MSFT is allowed to maintain a monopoly
as long as they don't use the monopoly to squash their
competition. They are attempting to put Netscape out of
business by using their market (monopoly) clout to encourage
PC manufacturers to include IE with Windows. Anyone can
give software away for free, but not everyone can get free
software on everyone's desktop without some serious arm-twisting.

Another thing that impressed me: the language and tone of
Janet Reno's statement. It indicated to me that there are
a lot of unhappy campers in the computer industry who are
bringing their weight to bear on the federal gov't to reign
in MSFT & their corrupt business practices. Enough is enough.
The DOJ has the resources to make Bill Gates' life miserable
for a long, long time and Ms. Reno's statement seemed to show
a good deal of resolve to do just that.

It will take Bill Clinton to call off the dogs, but I doubt he
would consider doing it without receiving some scratch first.
Of course, anything is possible...

cheers,
