If it were just a matter of the DOW going to 5K I would agree with you. But it looks to me like every Bank would have failed instead. You need to remember that a very substantial fraction of American "wealth" is simply systemic trust in various pieces of paper, ranging from green bills to business contracts. They can all be "marked to market" pretty quickly, in which case America is much poorer.
