Ian McAvity has (very promptly) replied to me and expresses his sympathy as to what happened to me yesterday.

I hope I have paraphrased him accurately when he says that being a closed end fund they have to watch the premium to NAV and although further issues must be accretive to NAV of existing holders, market premium is more difficult to account for.

Yesterday the premium to NAV of CEF was some 22% - cf centralfund.com

So there you have it - I am now wiser and poorer. And presumably after a "slashing" like this a good time to buy !!

I share this with you and others who like me didn't appreciate the subtleties of the system. I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to anyone else - apart from anything else you feel a little foolish.

I still think the moral of the story is to be in as much control of your assets as you can ( ie under the bed) and I must now read the small print of that gold I think is mine in Zurich !!!
