The issue I raised was not if the problem needed to be solved, or how important it was, but whether McCain's (or Obama's) direct involvement would help or hurt. Those working on the problem questioned the value of bringing the candidates into it, which interjects even more partisan politics when bipartisanship cooperation is needed.

That said, it looks likely there will be a deal anyway. Obama is right: we have scant time left for the public to get a good look at the head-to-head issues - not the lipstick issues - of these candidates. Let's proceed with the debate. If McCain is the best guy for the job, he can show it then.
