Robert, you bring up a very good point about the recent release in September. We have all been concentrating on JMAR's emerging technologies and ignored the current ones at PPL that are now producing money and growing at a great rate. I did some research after you posted your note to check things out.

I specifically wanted to concentrate on the Hard Drive industry and the Magneto Resistive heads (MR) that are experiencing very rapid growth. To start this discussion, I have scoured the internet for info relating to this technology. It appears that this technology is exploding, and since JMAR provides the tools to make these Hard Drives much improved, this area could be explosive for JMAR. Have we ignored this? Anyone have any additional comments or info?

Check out these two releases that relate to how JMAR is giving disk drive makers better quality MR heads. First, here is a paragraph from the September JMAR release:

The Mirage, a high-precision optical-based tabletop measurement system, was introduced to the microelectronics industry in 1996 by JMAR's Pacific Precision Laboratories (PPL) division specifically for small parts measurement and manufacturing process control. FEI will package the Mirage units with its focused ion beam work stations to provide computer disk drive manufacturers with the ability to trim magneto-resistive (MR) and other read/write disk drive heads to sub-micron tolerances. The Mirage units will generate the critical program instructions that guide the high precision ion beam trimming process. This higher level of precision enables manufacturers to significantly improve overall "head" performance while improving manufacturing efficiencies. MR heads represent one of the fastest growing segments of the computer components market.

Growth of MR head production (from IBM's web page)
----------------------------------------------------
Trend FOCUS93 predicts that the number of MR heads produced will
double each year from 1993 through 1996 -- from 15.5 million heads in 1993 to 77.7 million heads in 1996. This compares with an overall growth of only 10 percent per year for all heads -- including time period. This vigorous demand demonstrates that the "Era of Magnetoresistive Heads" for hard-disk drives has begun, and that the data storage industry recognizes the value of MR technology in producing competitive products with superior capacity, performance, and reliability.

New IBM notebook disk drive sets storage record
-----------------------------------------------------------------
IBM's MRX (Magnetoresistive Extended) head technology gets much of the credit for these record-breaking disk drives. The MRX head technology component sends out stronger signals than the previous generation heads, meaning it can store more bits per square inch on a disk drive platter.
