I think most Republicans do indeed believe the things they say. I don't think gay marriage threatens my marriage per se. It does cheapen the institution further though imo. I also think its a wedge designed to attack Christianity.

With it, you get state persecution of any institution that doesn't approve. Religious institutions will be pushed out of involvement in the adoption arrangement business (has happened with the Catholic church in MA), tax exemption will be attacked (has happened with a Methodist retreat in NJ), religious charities like the Salvation Army will be forced out of providing social services, institutions like the Boy Scouts which give recognition to God and bar homosexual leaders will be persecuted (is happening now), Christians will be attacked for not providing services to gay couples (has happened in CA and NM).

Gay marriage is all about enforcing liberal moral values on society.
