Then comes the ever-stupid and easily frightened Nancy Pelosi, the worst House Speaker in memory, who states that she won't support any "bail-out plan" unless a majority of Congressional Republicans do likewise. Bang! The trap is shut! Now, of course, McCain is indispensable to the bail out; if there's anybody who can craft a deal to get the (rightfully) skeptical conservative House Republicans to buy off, it's McCain. Obama is irrelevant to the process. McCain is the center of attention.

If he does the deal, McCain is in good shape. He needs to give the House Republicans a rallying point; if the Republicans stand behind him, the Democrats won't dare obstruct the deal. He can always tell the Republicans that if they don't stand behind him, they can have fun dealing with President Obama come January.

I think even the most principled conservatives are starting to realize how serious the situation is. If there is no deal by Monday, we will have a bloodbath in the markets. The credit markets have simply ground to a halt.
