Alexander Votes Against Reid Stimulus Bill
posted September 26, 2008

Sen. Lamar Alexander today released the following statement following his vote against the Reid Stimulus package:

“This bill is a grab bag of spending in the last week of session when we should be focused on the most serious issues facing the country.

“The American people won a huge victory this week when Congress lifted federal limits on oil exploration in Western states, and now the Majority Leader is trying to reverse that victory by reinstating the ban and preventing us from finding more American energy. At a time when our economy is struggling and we are trying to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, the worst thing we could do would be to pass this bill increasing spending and decreasing our ability to find more American energy.”

He said the bill would spend $56.2 billion and reinstate a ban on oil shale development in Western states. Experts predict developing oil shale could increase domestic oil production by two million barrels per day.

The Reid Stimulus package received 52 votes. Under Senate rules, 60 votes are required.
