Another Q&A Smart Balance: Does anyone have any information/opinions about this butter substitute spread? Wil-- Dr. Davis: Some general issues about butters/margarines: 1) Any product with hydrogenated/trans fats should be avoided. 2) If it is a canola-oil based product, it's okay. 3) As you likely know, if it is the Smart Balance with added sterols, I have some real reservations about the safety of sterols. (I believe there is a Smart Balance product with and another without.)
