Nobody knows. The crisis can, perhaps, be made less severe by
government intervention. Japan was fine in its "depression",
fine for the people. However, the economic weakness dragged
on for quite some time. It's impossible to avoid a crisis in
the US, but the way we go through it can be different. I
guess, the role of government intervention is to find the
optimal path. Frankly, I don't see the bailout package for
the banks as the optimal path - rather, the wrong path leading
to a deeper crisis down the road. Help is needed for the
real economy. However, Americans are short term
thinkers - it will postpone the mess for now, and that's good
enough. Unfortunately, short term thinking has led to this
mess.
