David: Strangely enough in the last 150 years, every major depresasion was preceded by government budget surpluses . Luckily, we are not there right now, but look at the sorry state of the Japanese economy and stock market (a ten years old bear or so), and of course, they just increased taxes last year. We are running a danger of some deflationary (yet not a depression in my opinion) pressures if the major industrialized countries continue their tight fiscal and monetary policies. The fear of inflation is so great that IMHO there is a dangerthat they will overdo the tightness.
