This doesn't sound all that surprising. Bob Akin (CEO) has said that the competition: Komatsu and LP have been making performance claims on paper that look better than Cymer but thats on paper and not proven in the field. He also commented that Komatsu would have to claim greater performance levels than Cymer just to get an audience. What would Komatsu say; "Hey Nikon we've got an excimer laser that underperforms the Cymer Laser your using now want to try it?

Let's not forget that even if Komatsu had a superior product it takes time to ramp up production and build a worldwide parts and service organization. The report says that Komatsu's Q1 '98 production will be 21 lasers while Cymer shipped 88 Q1 '97 117 Q3 '97 and we find out Thursday October 23rd 1997 at 4:17:29 EST what Q3 shipments were. I figure if Cymer shipped 107 lasers we made the estimated .21 for Q3. If Cymer shipped 157 lasers we continue the sequencial growth of Q1 to Q2.

Any manufacturer wants multiple suppliers for all materials, parts, components etc. If Komatsu or LP can produce competitive lasers they will find a ready market for them. Cymer took awhile to ramp up production and is still building parts and service while working on the 193nm next generation laser. They are obviously well ahead of Komatsu and LP and won't lose the lead if they don't stumble.

How many lasers does Komatsu have installed in the field vs Cymer's installed base? If Komatsu's Q1 '98 production is limited to 21 lasers and Cymer is capable of annual production of 1,000 lasers by the end of this year how long will it take Komatsu to ramp up and when they do what will be Cymer's installed base? I don't know but I'm not worried. It will be interesting to hear Akin's comments in the conference call. Thanks for the phone numbers
Griffin.

Luck to the Longs!!
