Better to buy real assets for $700 billion to remove the underlying problem than to just keep pumping liquidity. When the panic subsides, some savy investors will see that these assets really do have a value. Combine that with the ability of the government to renegotiate some of these loans, keeping people paying on them, also increases their overall value, and the value of surrounding homes.
