Were there Democrats that missed the boat when they should have been pushing regulations? Sure. My point is that these problems were caused by the Republican philosophy that deregulation is always a good thing, and that free markets will self regulate. That philosophy has been proven to be dead wrong in telcom, energy, and now banking. How many holes do we need in our feet until we get the point?

A good number of Republicans who voted no on the bailout were pushing an alternate solution that is based on this failed philosophy that free, unregulated markets work. They don't, unless you're willing to live through these periods of panic and depression - which happened with some regularity in the US prior to FDR's reforms.
