Just like after the tech bubble, also caused by deregulation, collapsed, we saw huge writedowns. We will still see those, and more collapses.

But if the underlying assets are shored up, and start to have a non-zero value, then we can get the leverage working in the opposite direction. And once people realize that a good number of these mortgages DO have value - especially if the government is given the power to rewrite some and let people keep paying on them - then, greed will once again replace fear.

These are houses, not tulips, and their value may plummet, but not to zero.
