<<<LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - BT British Telecommunications and GTE Corp are considering a joint bid to defeat the rival attempt by WorldCom Inc to take over MCI Communications , the Sunday Times reported.

The newspaper gave no further details, but analysts here have said they would welcome a deal between GTE and BT as it would salvage the British company's U.S. prospects. BT saw its bid for MCI eclipsed by U.S. upstart WorldCom, which offered $30 billion over two weeks ago. GTE later weighed in with a $28 billion bid. Industry sources told Reuters earlier that BT has been in talks with GTE for some time about joining its local businesses with MCI's long-distance operations. No one at BT was immediately available to comment.
