Growing up, my folk's place had a laundry room at the back of the property that was attached to the garage and "carriage house," which was the servants quarters over the garage. It included wash tubs to collect the clothes after they went through the wringers from the washing machine. (Who remembers those days?) The clothes line was right outside, for convenience, of course. The idea was to keep the day-to-day labor away from the main house. I think the idea of putting the laundry room in the basement stems from the same idea. After the washer and dryer were located to the service porch inside the house, my dad took advantage of the plumbing to build a darkroom for his photography hobby - long before digital.
