SEC Extends Short-Selling Ban as Bailout Unfolds
By Reuters | 01 Oct 2008 | 08:14 PM ET

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday said it would extend its existing short sale ban on financial stocks while Congress completes work on financial bailout legislation.

The ban had been scheduled to expire on Thursday night.

The SEC said its short sale ban on financial stocks will now expire on the third business day after U.S. legislation is enacted, and will not be extended beyond Oct. 17.

Two new rules related to the short-selling ban will be extended through Oct. 17, regardless of the Congress vote: the requirement on short sale disclosures, and the rule to curb abusive short selling.
