Let's wait and see how the DOJ action against Microsoft works out. I am willing to bet you nothing much happens other than a rewording of Microsoft's OS distribution agreement with vendors. Microsoft may substitute the current contract with a discount or pay promotion fees to vendors who install IE.

And while I agree COM is limited in ways, my partner and I are still:

1) Developing apps that use it without much difficulty,

2) Making money by using it.
