You're lucky to have such great memories of your get away home, and to have been able to spend time with your Aunt and family at your grandparent's place when you were young. It certainly sounds like you are grounded in that area...........a place I've never seen. It seems like it is always the weather that gets them in the end. I know we've experienced some horrific flooding at our cabin.......flooding that almost took it all away. I'd have the same optimistic attitude you have though, just because that is in my heart and just the way I am. Doesn't seem logical to mourn and pine for what was. I always look at these kind of life events as having been lucky to have had an opportunity to enjoy something that a lot of people can't or don't, or won't.
I'm reading a book that Alan Smithee recommended called "Issac's Storm." It is about the great Galveston Hurricane of 1900. It took every citizen of the city completely by surprise, especially the local weathermen working for the National Weather Service......which was in its very infancy. It was absolutely devastating, and even though I haven't finished it, I think thousands were killed.
We're lucky that we can see storms coming, and predict with pretty good accuracy how powerful they are, and evacuate people long before they come.
If the people of NO had read their history, I think they would have acted sooner, and demanded that citizens leave. but of course, for the most part, people don't know history, and don't understand the power of Hurricanes and floods.
Getting away with your loved ones alive and well is all a person that goes through one can ask for considering the awesome force these kinds of storms possess. |
