Smith, who has been the Spokane paper's editor for more than six years, resigned Wednesday as his publisher cut the editorial staff by about one-fourth. W. Stacey Cowles said the reductions -- 60 workers companywide with 27 in the newsroom -- were "nothing unusual" and a reaction to the economics of the newspaper industry. Smith says: "I think the impact of these cuts on the newsroom is devastating."
