Are you sure this is not a bait? I can mention a few "commercially available software package (one that most of us would be familiar with) that i feel excellent..." - Forte Agent (best newsreader) - Netscape Communicator (best browser) - Adobe Pagemaker (best DTP program) - Paint Shop Pro (best graphics package - this is even shareware) - Quarterdeck Cleansweep (for keeping M$' buggy software under control) - Norton Crashguard and Utilities (same as above) - Seagate Backup (Best backup client) - Eudora Pro (Best email client) Word and Excel have a pretty strong position, but we all know how M$ pretty much killed off WordPerfect and Lotus with their clever marketing schemes (the short version: set the price so cheap that the competition, to compete, need to lower their price to an unsustainable point). Also, unlike the products above, wordprocessors and spreadsheets need to maintain a high level of compatibility in order to be able to exchange documents with others. The bottom line is that in spite of all the M$-attempts to secure world monopoly, the only area where they have succeeded (well, depending on how you define success anyway) is Win95, Word and Excel.
