FDA Considers Banning Kids' Cold Meds

It's that time of year again, cough and cold season is almost here. Now a group of doctors is pushing regulators to outlaw cold medicines for children under the age of six.

Every year more than 7,000 kids end up in the hospital after overdosing on over-the-counter cold remedies.

Since the effectiveness of the medicines is not proven in young children, the American Academy of Pediatrics is asking the FDA to ban them outright. Doctors say side effects can include rapid heart rate, sleepiness and even seizure.

American consumers are expected to cough up more than $286 million this upcoming cold and flu season on cough medicines. Manufacturers are now agreeing to remove words like "pediatrician recommended" or "doctor approved" from package labels and advertising.

The FDA is not giving a timetable for a decision on the ban, so it's up to parents to decide whether to take the risk.
