Let's keep some perspective. The story didn't "wreak havoc" with the stock - the stock was already battered and bruised and acting terribly. It traded with the same level of volatility as it had traded with before the rumor.

And by the end of the day - long after the rumor was rebuked - AAPL was right back to the "low" levels reached during the rumor.

a concerted effort to manipulate the stock.

Of course. When all else fails, blame a trading loss on "shorters" and "evildoers".
