Subprime mortgages are at the root of the problem. Its mortgage backed securities that are going bad, being written down, causing losses and bankruptcies, not corporate bonds or anything else traded on Wall St. FMN and FRE don't do anything but handle mortgages, buying, securitizing, selling, guaranteeing. Other firms in trouble are in trouble due to holding investments or guarantees of securitized mortgages. Why deny reality?
