At a tumultuous meeting of anti-Vietnam War militants at the Chicago Coliseum in 1969, Bill Ayers helped found the radical Weathermen, launching a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and United States Capitol.

OMG isn't Bill Ayers the dangerous terrorist who is friends with Obama? It scares me just saying his name. I wish you wouldn't post stuff about him.

It was a pretty interesting time. The peace movement, and I was a part of that, was HUGE. Any time you have that many people involved, 10's of millions, and a VERY emotionally charged issue, you are going to have splinter groups that believe in violence. There were surprisingly few and without a lot of members... after all the whole movement was about ENDING violence.

At the time they were castigated for their means but not for their motive. They were never called terrorists; they were mostly called violent radicals. And, at least within the movement, the were never reviled as AQ is reviled today. And of course most of them tried to blow up stuff not people... and they were woefully incompetent compared to a real terrorist organization.
