I'm convinced the American public is still generally conservative and doesn't want to give power to the democrats despite the universally accepted failures of the Bush administration. It would be impossible to create a more favorable environment for the democrats than this one, but they are still struggling to win this thing. It's incredible.

I think the reason is that the mainstream media did everything in its power to put McCain at the top of the republican ticket while various types of true conservatives/republicans hated him but split their votes because they wanted someone else.

Now the center, which still deep down inside tilts right, is faced with two candidates it hates. A left of center candidate whose policies it really doesn't believe in and an incompetent old man that doesn't understand a damn thing about economics.
