I had to put my best friend Mikey to sleep Friday. He has been having problems with a hip but was still hale and hearty. According to the vet, he suffered several small strokes during and after the hurricane. When we had to move out of our house and into a rent house, that did it. He didn't move, eat or drink for two days. He was 17 years old. The vet said his kidney's were shutting down and they did offer to give him steroids for a short time to see if that would do any good. I told them I had made a deal with Mikey years ago that I would let him go with as much dignity as possible.

I have to tell you, I've had to put two beloved dogs down over the years. Mikey was truly my best friend on this planet. We discussed everything and he always seemed to have an opinion.

Mikey was a newfoundland lab mix and weight only 66 lbs when he passed away in my arms.

Our middle boy's dog Missy is a little depressed. She just doesn't understand where her companion went. We have a dog park down the street. We're going to take her over there this afternoon and let her get aquainted with some neighborhood dogs.

I know Mikey is better off where he is, I truly believe he's happy and pain free. I know it was the right thing to do but gosh almighty I just hurts like crazy.
