There is more to it than just Bandwidth.

When comparing the potential performance of the Net PC to the present day
desktop PC, one needs to consider factors other than bandwidth.

Even given unlimited free bandwidth, the Net PC will be fraught with other problems.

Once you surrender the soul of your machine to the Net, you are then totally
dependent upon it. If the central computer happens to be down for some reason,
then so are you. Your Net PC will not have enough resources of its own in order
for you to work off-line as you can with today's desktop.

The central computer serving you may be very slow as it gets burdened with 100's or 1000's of users.
I now have a 56K modem, and I can usually connect to my provider
at somewhere around 46,000 bps. If the site that I connect to can service this speed,
then I get very fast (by today's standards) data transfer. But most of the sites that
I connect do not service me at this speed. Many times I will see a transfer speed of
only 500 bytes/sec = 4000 bps. Only 1/10th of the potential of my connection.

Have you ever tried to resolve problems with your ISP lately. They are usually
providing service to 1000's of other customers. When you attempt to call in to their
office for troubleshooting a problem, you will invariable be on hold for quite sometime.
Now image if you are calling in because the central computer lost some of the data
that you were storing on it . You need that data in order to print out a report for a
business meeting you have today. You call your provider and are put on hold. You
are told that all lines are busy and you can leave a message and someone will get
back to you. How long can you wait?

I'd welcome any comments on my thoughts.
