Neogen Introduces Test for Sulfites in Seafood

LANSING, Mich., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Neogen Corporation (Nasdaq:NEOG) announced today that it was introducing
its new Alert(R) test for the detection of excess sulfites in seafood. The new rapid test allows seafood processors to make
certain sulfite levels do not exceed federal regulatory levels.

Sulfiting agents such as sodium bisulfite and sodium metabisulfite are commonly used by processors of shrimp, lobster and
other crustaceans to prevent enzyme breakdowns, commonly referred to as black spot. This discoloration is usually associated
with poor quality product or improper handling.

Though sulfites enhance seafood quality when used properly, they present a toxic threat to many allergic consumers.

The Neogen Alert test is inexpensive and can be conducted in less than five minutes without any special laboratory equipment.
The current traditional method of testing for sulfites is time consuming, and involves complicated techniques requiring laboratory
facilities and trained technicians.

''This test now gives Neogen seven different rapid diagnostic tests for the seafood market,'' said Terri Juricic, general manager
of Neogen's seafood division. ''For the past year, Neogen has been on a rapid development schedule to get several new
diagnostic tests in the marketplace to help seafood processors comply with the new FDA HACCP program that becomes
effective in mid-December.''

Neogen developed this new test for sulfites in cooperation with the Aquatic Food Products Laboratory at the University of
Florida. The new Alert test for sulfites was tested extensively by shrimp processors before its release to the market.

Neogen is a Lansing, Michigan based company that develops and markets solutions for safety and improved quality in food,
agriculture, and pharmacologics.
