I'm posting this to you only because I recall you once saying that you favored "Medicare for everyone" as the preferable approach to health "insurance." It's just an anecdote from my early experience with Medicare for the benefit of anyone on the thread enamored of single-payer. FWIW.

This morning I finally got around to opening my medical mail for this year. I found a statement from Medicare for some blood work I had done. My A1c blood test, that's the one that monitors blood glucose, was challenged. It said that the test wasn't justified. I take that to mean that, since I'm not yet quite diabetic, officially, that monitoring blood glucose so that I can try to prevent diabetes is not covered. If I want to monitor it, I'm on my own. Of course, I will, but I would expect the A1c to be covered by any insurance for anyone with metabolic syndrome/syndrome X/pre-diabetes. I would not consider the present Medicare policy to be adequate coverage.

Interestingly, the statement said that I shouldn't pay for the test this time since I was not expected know it wasn't covered. It was not clear if Medicare was paying this time but not in the future or whether they're stiffing the provider. Of course, I won't let the provider be stiffed. I expect that Blue Cross will pick it up but, if not, I will. Blue Cross has sent me nothing indicating the balance was passed along to them.

I have subsequently had another A1c so I will be looking forward to seeing how it's handled.
