Re: "But this press release was put out by MOT, and was viewed by a couple other folks in the field that I interact with as, variously, a "puff-piece", and "...the same old sob story that MOT, who does not have a proven product, has been spreading for some time..."

Steve,

You make statements like that and then have the Gall to talk about our bias??? Your bought and paid for, though I have not figured out by who yet!

The ATM News Digest quotes ANSI for the story.

ANSI ADVANCES STANDARD FOR DMT-BASED ADSL
The American National Standards Institute's (ANSI's) T1E1.4
working group recently completed the draft text of Issue II, a
supplement to the international standard for Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line (ADSL), and unanimously voted to send the text
to letter ballot. Issue II maintains backwards compatibility
with Issue I of ANSI T1.413, specifies how to transport ATM
cells over ADSL, extends the highest data rates to more than 8
Mbps, and reduces the ADSL framing overhead during ATM transport
to increase upstream and downstream performance. Agreement on
Issue II is expected to foster interoperability among various
vendors' Discrete Multitone (DMT)-based ADSL silicon devices.
ANSI's general T1 membership is expected to vote on the text at
its next meeting in December. (http://www.ansi.org/)
