They, like most in Washington D.C., are living in an alternate universe, not unlike something created in a video game.

I remember when people thought it was incredible that George Bush left office and discovered that there were these new fangled contraptions called "scanners," yet at the time, everybody knew the President wasn't out shopping every day.

The disconnect today, even among talking heads (e.g. 'the middle class average income is 250k) is enormous. I'd guess the disconnect (and disdain) is not unlike the level reached historically when the aristocracy woke up dead of a morning.

I talked to a friend last night who said that her take is that anger is seething in the US, and just below the surface. She thinks there will be rioting no matter who wins. Could be; nobody expected the Rodney King riots.

She said that her family was financially damaged in 2000 from the tech bubble and again now from ... ? She really didn't know what to call it. We have a class of people who have simply plundered the middle class, either a) because they were disconnected* and greedy or b) because they were disconnected and ignorant**
