Brazilian iron ore exports in September up by 28% YoY

steelguru.com

According to data disclosed by Foreign Trade Secretariat, Brazilian exports of iron ore grew up by 28% YoY in September 2008 over the same month a year ago to 29.23 million tonnes. In the January to September 2008 period, 223.25 million tonnes were shipped, up by 12.14% YoY.

The numbers show that Brazilian sales continue heated and show indications that one of the principal destinations of the Brazilian mineral, China, continues firm.

China accounts for 39% of Brazilian international iron ore sales and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce is negotiating an 11% price increase for that market, which has provoked protests and threats by the Chinese steelmakers to boycott the Brazilian product.

Mr Amilcar Teixeiara Santos a consultant with Metal Data said that "These discussions are part, to a large extent, of the arm wrestling between miners and steelmakers which begins before the launch of formal negotiations to show power and intimidation."
