nearly all of them in fact defended dictatorships controlled by pro-U.S. elites

Until 1963, most of the countries of intervention were colonies. Decolonization created weak new states, most ruled by elites that were the few positioned to govern. And yes, we defended these weak new states from Chinese and Soviet expansionism, a fact conveniently forgotten by your author.

that prevented the country's people from overthrowing their own dictator first, and installing a new democratic government more to their liking

Prevented a communist takeover, you mean?
